I’m really excited to share some news with you about a new project! Last year, I wrote a children’s book, “Blankie’s Diary”. I’m really proud of this piece and shopped around for an agent, but alas I couldn’t find one. That doesn’t mean it’s not an amazing book. It means that the publishing industry has shrunk down to only 3 or 4 major houses, and NONE will accept manuscripts without an agent. This is also true of many smaller houses, and agents are completely swamped with submissions.

One of the great things about self-publishing is that I get to choose my illustrator. You may not know this, but 90% of the time children’s book authors do not get to choose their own illustrator. Unless you’ve done the pictures yourself agents do not want to see the illustrations. Sometimes they don’t even want ones you’ve drawn yourself. That can be pretty scary as an author.

Luckily for me, one of my good friends is an astoundingly talented artist. Crystal McLain recently published her own coloring book, Lucid Dreams, and has had a long career creating and selling gorgeous artwork. I am beyond thrilled that she will be illustrating, “Blankie’s Diary” for me.  We work very well together and she is truly making my vision come to life. Please check out her Facebook Page, “Art and Books by Crystal McLain”  For more examples of her wonderful work, as well as some sneak peeks at our book in the weeks to come.

We are hoping to have the book out in early November so that it’s ready for Holiday gifts.

In addition to,”Blankie’s Diary” I also have 3 books in production with Zoozil Media. I can’t say anything about them because of contractual obligations, but I hope to get you all in the loop soon!

Thanks! I will have to look into that, I wonder if they will carry self-published books? That would be super cool. I’m definitely going to try to get it in as many indie bookstores as possible.

How wonderful, Kate! I look forward to giving this no-brainier holiday gift to my niece and nephew.

  7. I am a client of Crystal’s. The past couple times I have gone for a massage, Crystal has been working on the illustrations as I enter the office. The illustrations that I have seen are great! During my massages Crystal has told me a little bit about your book project. I think it is a fantastic project. I can see a whole series of books being written.
Have you thought about trying to get on MPBN’s Maine Calling show to discuss your book when it is published? Are you going to send a copy of your book to the editor of the New York Times Book Review? Will you try to get the book into local gift shops like the Sea Gull or the Smiling Cow?

Thanks so much for your kind words, and I apologize for the delay in responding. This book was sent to a number of agents, who said that they liked it, but are just not buying many children’s books right now. I would love to have it in as many bookstores and venues as possible, however it can be difficult to get it out there since it is self-published. I will keep the blog updated with new information, sales locations, and events as things get rolling along.
